Schal330@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•How it feels using TOR as a Brit rn 🤘10·13 days agoThere were restrictions in the UK before this latest measure got put in place, ISP providers provide it so parents could manage it. But my guess is a large proportion of parents were either too stupid to use, didn’t care, or simply didn’t know. Broadband parental control.
In my social circle in the UK everyone got married in their 30’s and started having kids mid to late 30’s. It’s not a race to get married, but the biological clock is there for having kids.
Schal330@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Competition shows humans are still better than AI at coding – justEnglish6·15 days agoWhen I originally saw this report on another source, the key standout for me was how many people were beaten by the AI, and the fact the winner was 5% ahead, which really is a small margin. It was being touted as “Yay we beat the AI!” without acknowledging that there were a lot of people that lost to it.
Schal330@lemmy.worldto Mental Health@lemmy.world•Giving up driving will reduce your stress and anxiety, and help connect you to your neighborhoodEnglish221·15 days agoThe writer says not using a car provides a better quality of time spent and cost of living, but this is just their experience and perception.
I didn’t drive for 6 months, and it cost me more time and more money. Being able to drive offers me greater freedoms, I now have time in the morning to have a slightly longer lie in, make myself some breakfast, and have a greater certainty that my mode of transport isn’t going to get canceled. The levels of frustration and anxiety from using public transport are much greater than being in a car that I ensure is maintained.
The writer states that their friends are always late because they drive cars and are rushing everywhere, but on the other hand the writer needs to account for canceled transportation and so essentially has to have a buffer. The friends being late isn’t down to the car, it’s down to their time planning skills, they need to put a buffer in.
I disagree that giving up driving will reduce my stress and anxiety, I gave it up for 6 months and it was worse. The stress and anxiety of trying to navigate canceled transport and the “will I be able to get home without it costing me a fortune” is not something I enjoyed what was at least twice a week.
Schal330@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What book did you read last and what book are you currently reading? Would you recommend either of those books?4·21 days agoLast book: The Hero of Ages (Mistborn) by Brandon Sanderson
Current book: Wind and Truth (Stormlight Archive) by Brandon Sanderson
I would 1000% recommend these books and other Cosmere books to anyone that enjoys fantasy but with the caveat of being aware of the Sanderlanche. Pretty much every book this guy writes takes time building everything up so it can feel quite slow, but then towards the end you get your avalanche of action, quick story progression, and answers to questions you get throughout the books.
Schal330@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What book did you read last and what book are you currently reading? Would you recommend either of those books?2·21 days agoI could only just get through Name of the Wind many years ago. As I was reading it something just felt off and was bothering me massively, I then came to the realisation that the main character (Kvothe) was just too perfect. His flaws were the world around him, not himself, and really the only fault that could be considered was that he was so good at everything he would do too much and get burnt out.
Is the second book better, and would you say it’s worth reading given the third one is nowhere in sight?
Schal330@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your thoughts or predictions for society in the next 5 to 10 years? (serious)7·1 month agoI like this take, I want this one.
I joined Lemmy during the Reddit API change. It was pretty dead on Lemmy but communities were forming and I could have discussions with others, it felt promising. But sadly the reality now is it feels like Lemmy is becoming an echo chamber like Reddit was and conversations are stifled.
In addition to this some people immediately engage others in a negative way, where someone may be misinformed or misunderstood, and rather than offer knowledge or insight they are called fucking idiots.
It doesn’t feel like a community.

Schal330@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something unexplained that you experienced?12·1 month agoMany years ago, I had a dream where I was in a church, talking to my ex, who was wearing a wedding dress. It was just a chat about why things didn’t work out, how it was a horrible break up but we both accepted we were young and stupid and we wished the best for each other’s future - it was a very calm and positive dream. We hadn’t spoken in 5 or so years and were in no way connected on any social media platform or had any friends in common at this point.
A couple of weeks later after the dream she emailed my old email out of the blue saying she’d found some pictures of my dog from when we were together. I thanked her and asked how life was going. Shed moved to America and had got married recently. I congratulated her and wished her the best, but never stayed in touch after then.
I’m sure there is a grounded explanation to it, but I also like to think that there could be something more universal/spiritual to it.

Looks delicious! 🤤 Thanks for sharing the recipe too.
Can this be considered a sandwich, or would it be a flatbread?
Thanks, it’s interesting to read your thoughts on this.
If you were a Jr entering the job market now, and have management encouraging vibe coding because they want quick results, how would you go about getting the experience and building the right skillset?
why would I hire someone at all?
AI doesn’t get everything right, and you need someone capable of validating that and pivoting it in the right direction. But also AI cannot currently do everything, so you need someone to fill those areas. Where I work there is a push to engage with AI more, probably to train it.
So why would I hire you over anyone else?
This is like any other job really, people aren’t hired based purely on their skillset, but other factors too such as their capability to learn, their personality, will they mesh well with the existing team, have they got drive to make things better, do they have soft skills to position themselves to become better, is the person adaptable - are they able to use new technology to their advantage or are they stubborn and stuck in their old ways?
I want to be in a position to know and understand all the fundamentals, but is the bar for what is considered fundamental shifting? Once upon a time those who were writing low level code would have said what they do are the fundamentals, but as time went on we got new levels of coding and so knowing how to write low level code is no longer a required skill.
Apologies if I’ve misunderstood what you’re trying to say. But thanks for responding, these kinds of discussions are helpful.
I’ve been a Jr coming up to two years. When working on tasks I have a rough idea of what I want to achieve and some steps on the way there, but don’t know how to actually implement it. I’ve found using copilot useful to fill in some of the gaps and give me ideas and direction.
I’m concerned that there are skills I am missing out on developing, but at the same time if AI is being pushed so heavily is it not something I should lean into to be better equipped in working with it?
Schal330@lemmy.worldto Programming@programming.dev•AI Models from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic Solve 0% of ‘Hard’ Coding Problems5·2 months agoIn the worst case scenario where you ask it a coding problem for which there is no solution—it’s just not possible to do what you’re asking—it may nevertheless engage you indefinitely until you eventually realize it’s running you around in circles.
Exactly this, and it’s frustrating as a Jr dev to be fed this bs when you’re learning. I’ve had multiple scenarios where it blatantly told me wrong things. Like using string interpolation in a terraform file to try and set a dynamic source - what it was giving me looked totally viable. It wasn’t until I dug around some more that I found out that terraform init can’t use variables in the source field.
On the positive side it helps give me some direction when I don’t know where to start. I use it with a highly pessimistic and cautious approach. I understand that today is the worst it’s going to be, and that I will be required to use it as a tool in my job going forward, so I’m making an effort to get to grips when working with it.
Schal330@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was the worst hotel you ever stayed at?9·2 months agoI cant remember the name but it was a hotel in Bruges. The lobby looked lovely, but everything else was strange or run down.
Honestly thinking back I feel like it was a fever dream. They had a lift that was incredibly small. The stairs were steep and covered in this really cheap thin red carpet that did not muffle the sound of people walking. To get to my room I had to go up two sets of stairs, and then down a set of stairs.
The room required me to then go down another set of stairs, open the door for it to hit the end of the bed. The mattress was all spring, uncomfortable and had me waking up with backache. The windows were on the ceiling, but difficult to open and the room was stuffy.
The shower seemed to have been put in what used to be a closet. No proper ventilation, and a skanky shower curtain. When turning the shower on it was equivalent to someone pouring water from a watering can on me.
I complain, but it was booked and paid for by someone else. Bruges was lovely and I was only sleeping in the room for a couple of nights.
