  • I just prefer an exception be thrown if I forget to set something so it’s likely to happen as soon as I test it and will be easy to find where I missed something.

I don’t think a language is going to prevent someone from making a human error when writing code, but it should make it easy to diagnose and fix it when it happens. If you call it null, “”, empty, None, undefined or anything else, it doesn’t change the fact that sometimes the person writing the code just forgot something.

Abstracting away from the problem just makes it more fuzzy on where I just forgot a line of code somewhere. Throwing an exception means I know immediately that I missed something, and also the part of the code where I made the mistake. Trying to eliminate the exception doesn’t actually solve the problem, it just hides the problem and makes it more difficult to track down when someone eventually notices something wasn’t populated.

Sometimes you want the program to fail, and fail fast (while testing) and in a very obvious way. Trying to make the language more “reliable” instead of having the reliability of the software be the responsibility of the developer can mean the software always “works”, but it doesn’t actually do what it’s supposed to do.

Is the software really working if it never throws an exception but doesn’t actually do what it’s supposed to do?

  • What do you call two people voting with an antisemite? Three antisemites.

Look at the vote count. It was never going to pass. It wouldn’t have changed the outcome no matter which way they voted, so it’s purely a vote indicating their principles. They could’ve abstained (refusing to vote with nutjob MTG but also refusing to vote for funding), but instead voted with MTG to signal that they are fine with being in alignment with white supremacist antisemitism.

But now we know their principles are to vote with an antisemite to indicate they want Israeli civilians to die.

  • Even with qualitative measurements they can do stupid things.

For work I have to write code in C# and Microsoft found that null reference exceptions were a common issue. They actually calculated how much these issues cost the industry (some big number) and put a lot of effort into changing the language so there’s a lot of warnings when something is null.

But the end result is people just set things to an empty value instead of leaving it as null to avoid the warnings. And sure great, you don’t have null reference exceptions because a value that defaulted to null didn’t get set. But now you have issues where a value is an empty string when it should have been set.

The exception message would tell you exactly where in the code there’s a mistake, and you’ll immediately know there’s a problem and it’s more likely to be discovered by unit tests or QA. Something that’s an value that’s supposed to be set may not be noticed for a while and is difficult to track down.

So their research indicated a costly issue (which is ultimately a dev making a mistake) and they fixed it by creating an even more costly issue.

There’s always going to be things where it’s the responsibility of the developer to deal with, and there’s no fix for it at the language level. Trying to fix it with language changes can just make things worse.

  • Israel exists because there wasn’t anywhere in the world that would grant Jews asylum in WW2. Rejecting boatloads of Jews is continuing the strong case for the need for a Jewish state.

And you can’t call Jews living in Israel “colonists” as if they can “go back to Europe” now. They can’t leave Israel now,

On one hand there’s a large number of people that want to “wipe Israel off the map” and on the other hand we have European countries not allowing Jews to enter. So what is the meaning behind “wipe Israel off the map” now?

I used to think a Jewish state wasn’t necessary, though I didn’t have a problem with there being one. I figured we’d never go back to a to the dark times of the past. But now I’m absolutely convinced that a Jewish state is 100% necessary. So… congratulations, protesters?

  • So we want civilians to be killed by rocket attacks now?

That makes it clear this “pro-Palestinian” movement is not actually against civilians being killed… they actually do want civilians to die. It’s just they want only civilians of a specific ethnicity to die.

Fellow Democrats Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar [as well as Democrats Al Green of Texas, Summer Lee of Pennsylvania and Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky - PL] had supported Taylor Greene’s amendment, which eventually lost in a 422-6 vote.

So there’s a willingness of the “pro-Palestinian” movement to ally itself with anti-semites of the nationalist white supremacist variety. Nationalists and “socialists” finding common ground in their hatred of Jews. Where have I heard this one before?

  • Which country do you think the people masscred in Tiananmen square were from? Were the people massacred there people known for making silk?

Why would they be referencing silk at all? Yeah they referenced silk thinking “I’m sure people will get get the connection from silk to textiles to Palestinians.”

The Ghorman massacre was referenced in Star Wars Rebels in 2017 and was referenced in the EU in the 1990s FFS. Do you really think the people making Star Wars are clairvoyant? Tianamen Square would’ve been fresh in the minds of people in the 90s I think it’s more likely referencing that event than events that hadn’t happened yet.

See, again, people like this are exactly why we need the protagonist to look directly at the camera and explain things to them.

    Indeed.

  • So there’s a planet famous for producing silk where peaceful protesters are massacred in a public square and you only think of Gaza? There is definitely no place on Earth like that other than Gaza!

I’m pretty sure the Israel Gaza war kicked off with terrorists masscring people in villages and taking hostages, but it wasn’t the IDF doing that shit. Did Andor portray that at all?

I tried to find clips to see what it’s referencing some more but holy shit that show is 90% pretentious speeches. But even then it’s pretty obvious.

You are correct there are some people that need things spelled out for them or they don’t understand it. Some even resort to Qanon style numerology to try to prove weird connections between things.

Anyway, which silk producing country massacred peaceful protesters in a public square? Come on… .you can figure it out! Somewhere where vehicles were used to crush protesters? Maybe someone made a memorial and an authoritarian regime took it down… Hint
