  • They also have a sizeable number of Jewish population. So, Ethiopia has Jews, Christians and Muslims. In the words of Mallory Archer.: that is Abrahamic religion triple whammy.

I’d like to visit Ethiopia one day. I have seen videos and documentary about the country and its history. I had a colleague who is Ethiopian and mentioned that the capital city is lovely especially during winter, when it is cool but not too cold because Harare is in the highlands. I know there is conflict in the country at the moment, but compared to its neighbouring countries, Ethiopia seems pretty good at recovering quickly from any turmoil. When it is safe enough, i would like to visit the country.

  • It is naive to think diversity is without issues, but ultimately it is indeed strength. Studies showed diverse teams performed better than non-diverse ones. Even though I am vehemently anti-imperialist, multiethnic empires of the past lasted long because they embraced diversity, synthesising ideas and technology from various cultures. Remove the imperialism, and diversity on its own is inherently advantageous. The talent and intellect from various people who have different perspectives allow for creativity and innovation.

As talented Germany as had before and during World War II, history as we know it might have turned out differently if the Nazis did not scare the Jewish intelligentsia and atomic scientists out of the country and absorbed by the US instead. What Trump is doing is precisely that. The US will ultimately fail for its anti-intellectualism and persecution of those different. Other countries will benefit from the brain drain. This is why fascist regimes will always fail because their own policies, which are wholly driven by emotions, are their own undoing. That is the good news. The bad news is that it will get worse before it gets better.

  • Unfortunately for you, even Gorbachev wasn’t as pro-West as many would like to think he is. He himself expressed concerns of NATO expansion after the collapse of the Soviet Union. One would think that the leader who warmed up and made overtures to the West, would want to join NATO after, but nope.

Putin asked to be invited to join NATO, and so did Stalin, but were refused. Knowing the two, it is their mind games to test if the alliance is indeed anti-Russia, without actually intending to join.

It was only under Yeltsin at Clinton’s behest did Russia seriously considered joining, but Germany at the time refused. NATO is indeed an anti-Russia alliance. But that’s not necessarily a damning fact, because much of the Russians are not pro-West anyway and they are jingoistic. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the anti-communist writer and was hailed by the West, was a jingoist and anti-West but the West deliberately put that aside. Even Putin’s late rival, Alexei Navalny, was an ultranationalist who supported the annexation of Crimea (he recanted his views in the last election just before he died, but he was probably only saying the things that the West and others wants to hear to support him against Putin). Navalny was survived by his wife but she is also similarly ultranationalist.

What a lot of people miss on the discourse is the fact that Russians are first and foremost, nationalists and then whatever comes second.

  • Not being shot by a riflemen like most people would think.

But I think there’s some true to it that not that many soldiers even got within firing range of the enemy.

You may want to sign in to YouTube because it is age restricted, but have you seen the video footage from France24 reporter getting into the midst of a firefight with the FARC in Colombia? You can’t actually see where the bullets are from. You hear the general direction of where the shot is from, but not specifically where. Fortunately, the crew survived after being taken hostage and then later freed.

Unlike in movies where they could pinpoint where the shooter is, in the footage no one can see where the shots are coming from. Real life combat is precisely like that. No wonder you’d call in artillery to smoke out enemies and drones to simply remotely do the killing.

  • There is a study that showed workers don’t mind commuting so long as the route is full of greenery and nature. That explains a lot because in my hometown, I was happy enough to commute in public transport and people are nice enough that you can chat with them. Then I moved to a bigger city, which is a concrete jungle. I hate the commute. And mind you, the public transport in my home town is about ten to twenty minutes more depending on the traffic, but I didn’t mind for some reason. Then, after moving to a bigger city, travelling only for one hour feels like a long trek.
