TomMasz@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•At this point who in the world could stop Trump over doing something totally illegal? Like lets say using bunker buster bombs to destroy DEM cities? Or is USA communially FUCKED?English16·2 days agoCould stop him or would stop him? SCOTUS has granted him blanket immunity for anything done as an “official act”, without bothering to specify exactly what an official act is. This has opened up a Pandora’s Box, needless to say. They’re literally expanding the power of the President, not limiting it.
Congress, since it is fully GOP-dominated, will neither impeach him nor attempt to override any veto should they pass laws to curtail his activities. Not that they would, of course.
The military has a duty to follow the Constitution and is supposed to disregard any orders to the contrary. But whether the military will act according to Trump or the Constitution is an open question. Remember, Trump has removed a number of senior officers whose loyalty to him was in question. And there are a lot of right-wing extremist types in the lower ranks of the military.
In short, we’re probably FUCKED.
The LD50 of eggnog is a liter, no wonder.
Well, it would make the best volcano at the school Science Fair. And possibly lead to your arrest. So, not ideal.

From what I can gather, it was a spoon-shaped piece of metal that applied friction to the wheel. Not a hydraulic disc, but more than just the legs. Her track bike probably didn’t have one, though.
TomMasz@lemmy.worldto Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Study sheds light on why some people keep self-sabotagingEnglish3·3 days agoThis seems hard to believe at first. Why would anyone keep doing something that harms them? Then you realize that this pattern appears in so many places. People are still smoking and voting for politicians who make their lives worse, despite ample evidence they’re harming themselves. And they’re likely to keep doing it.

I won’t say how long it took me to get this one.

For MAGA, it’s not that Trump is on the list, it’s that the Democrats and elites are. He can do what he wants, they can’t. For the rest of us, though, all the names on the list matter.

TomMasz@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Would wine from back in ancient times and civilizations have been dogshit compared to a basic marketable wine produced by modern viniculture?English21·7 days agoDogshit? No. Different? Definitely. The wild yeasts on the skin weren’t cultivated for alcohol tolerance, so ancient wines would tend to have a lower ABV. They might have some sourness from bacteria found on the skin along with the yeast. Whether or not they’d be sweet or dry would depend on the yeasts and the grapes themselves. There would be a lot of variability from year to year. The Romans, for one, preferred sweeter wines and would add grape syrup, defrutum, made from boiling down grape juice, if the wine was dry. Other cultures might do something similar or just grin and bear it. There was a lot of variety across time and place.
It should be noted that the Romans would sometimes use lead vessels for making defrutum. This would add lead acetate to the syrup, which has a sweet taste, and make it even sweeter.
It’s more soul-killing than embarrassing.
