The big difference between any Sim City game and Cities Skylines is Cities Skylines has an extremely in-depth traffic simulation that actually punishes bad road design and encourages non-car modes of transit. Meanwhile Sim City always made nods to traffic, it never bothered with actual per person routing where you can focus on tweaking a single intersection for hours trying to get it to flow nicely

Also the high tech industry is useful for your highly educated cims while still satisfying industrial needs
Cities Skylines is the first domino on the new boom of people caring about city planning, walkability, public transit, micro-mobility, etc.
People build extremely dense cities then go “wait but traffic” dig into how to fix it and ultimately end up building far less car dependency into their cities as the easiest solution
Trainguyrom@reddthat.comto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why can computers, like even very old laptops can seemingly get OS updates forever, while mobile devices hardly get a few years of updates before getting stuck out of date?English32·4 days agoEveryone dunks on Apple for throttling older batteries but the fact is this was super pro-consumer move. It prevents the phone from randomly powering off because the SOC tries to pull a burst of energy that the battery is too tired to output, and resets following a battery replacement, plus nobody notices the throttling except under synthetic benchmarks where you actually have performance numbers to see the handful of percentage points of performance difference. AND after this kerfuffle they added a toggle switch where if you so prefer random instability on an aging battery over 2% slower turbo performance you can choose to have that.
Trainguyrom@reddthat.comto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the big deal about Kick.com ?English6·6 days agoWell, it’s quite simple really:
- Kick has very little moderation. Pirate streams and gambling streams abound on Kick
- The worst people who got banned from YouTube and Twitch continue to stream on Kick and who wants to be associated with that?
- Kick is owned by a gambling company. Seriously think about it for more than 10 seconds, the service is entirely built on AWS which costs so much even Twitch which is literally owned by Amazon can’t turn a profit. Venture capital ain’t handing out free money to super unprofitable companies right now so they clearly are making money somewhere, and that somewhere is gambling
Trainguyrom@reddthat.comto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•"This is so dangerous!", laments the woman driving directly into a Critical Mass bike rideEnglish1·13 days agoThe OP has some context but Lemmy is bad about showing the text included with a media post so it’s easy to miss. The OP states it’s a “critical mass” protest where large numbers of cyclists reclaim the street to demand better bicycle infrastructure
I actually had played Cities in Motion and Cities in Motion II before Cities Skylines was released. The first Cities in Motion is actually really well done, the second one feels too much like a city builder that doesn’t want to be a city builder
