  • Science headlines urgh.

The development here is that they’ve figured out a model of the actual interaction thats happening during the transition phase between nREM and REM, which is pretty cool. We’ve known dreams are an artefact of memory processing for a long time, as well as that REM is basically long-term memory thunderdome. But the actual mechanisms underlaying this, in non-abstracted terms, are still hugely complex and largely not understood. This is a big step forward (if verified) towards the goal of unraveling the full memory encoding process.

  • The nazi presence in the furry movement is really under estimated by people who’re outside the subculture. There’s, like… there’s a lot of them in there, guys. Recruiting from persecuted groups is already standard operating procedure for fascists, and the furry community notoriously has both money, a great deal of practice at forming groups that insulate their members from criticism, and a real serious problem with sexism. Unfortunately, it makes for the ideal environment to grow far-right movements.

    Noun: […]
    3. One who knew a specific decedent.
“She was from a large family and had many friends, so the funeral was crowded with mourning survivors”

    Via wiktionary.

Did you really just not look this up, at all? Seriously, this is an extremely common usage of the term. Why are you so defensive about this? For that matter, why do you think arguing semantics at all is relevant to the discussion at hand - beyond just making you look like you’re arguing in bad faith?

I used to be pretty neutral about it -people are obsessed with all kinds of weird shit, why is this any different- but then my cousin did some truly horrifying national news making shit (and then in an unrelated incident, another family member was murdered incredibly publicly…) and… oh boy. The truecrime community is full of some of the truly most self-absorbed, main character syndrome people. A particular favorite was when someone who’d been hounding a family member for details, and who was subsequently blocked for it, dug up their address and wrote them a physical letter asking for details, in pink ink.

Just. How tone-deaf do you have to be to think that’s at all appropriate? what the fuck?

I like crime, it’s interesting, but in 99% of the true crime I’m interested in nobody gets injured. Weird how the “truecrime” podcasts never seem to feature, like, elaborate fraud schemes, you have to go to the financial podcasts to find it (and oh boy are they awful in new and exciting ways!)

  • You think ya’ll don’t have community spaces? I have 100% seen things like this flying into numerous European countries and in the larger train stations, they just didn’t have the obnoxiously ostentatious signs (which I sorta appreciate having, though it’s form is laughable it’s a decent warning about what’s going on there so you can avoid it like the plague). It’s pretty common to have some sort of designated managed space within public spaces, with an admitted abstraction it’s not all that different from getting parade permits or reserving space in a park.
