  • I went through a phase of watching these kinds of films in my early 20’s, but you are correct, the majority just end up being shallow. I thought Barbarian had a good script somewhat recently. Perhaps it doesn’t have the same extreme shock value for all of it, but it has its moments. The original Funny Games was also a winner for the super heavy depressive quality of it.

After a while though, I feel like watching these films, especially when you see several of them in a short time, just leaves you wondering “why am I doing this to myself?”

  • I live on the border and cross into Mexico several times per week. First off, crossing into Mexico by car will involve more scrutiny than doing it on foot. Weapons laws are very strict there, don’t have any self defense equipment on you at all or else you could be in major trouble at the border. Also, bringing a car in for more than a temporary stay requires getting import permission. If you are going to Mexico City specifically, you will need to have a work visa and that means having pre-arranged plans for a job when you apply. There are a lot of people who travel to teach in Mexico—they aren’t desperate. You want to have actual qualifications for the job so you can compete.

Mexico is not some laissez-faire country like you seem to think it is, and Mexico City is a modern international mega-city. Places you try to get a job, especially as an American, are going to expect you to be legit.

Contrary to some of the replies here, I have actually found Mexico to have a relatively large gay and trans community, so in that respect, you’d have social options.

  • What is someone supposed to do exactly? Epstein was one of the most powerful and well connected individuals when he was alive. Let’s say you saw an employee who looked young—you go to the police, you tell them your suspicions…did you get her ID? Do you think Epstein won’t sue you until you’re broke? Do you think there will be justice when he can call up politicians and get things buried?

I’m not suggesting that everyone should keep their mouth shut all the time, it is just that he was a huge dragon that could not be attacked unless you were a particularly qualified hero. Who knows how many people tried to blow the whistle and ended up dead or discredited and in poverty. It is easy enough to say “they should have done something”, but succeeding is a whole different ballgame.

If you were deep enough to actually know things that you could prove, you were very likely the kind of person who was also guilty. That is part of why the plan worked for so long.

  • I’m not saying he wasn’t guilty, I’m saying he was an operator in a system that was already corrupt rather than doing something unusually criminal. I am no expert, so please correct me if I have misunderstood something.

As I read it, he was found guilty of taking campaign bribes from wealthy oil businesses because it was a requirement for having any chance of getting elected in Brazil. Petrobras had essentially become a criminal organization that was controlling huge numbers of politicians, and their support was a requirement to win elections. Lula seems to have participated in the corrupt system, but it does not seem like he was the person who made it be that way.

When I say his arrest was for political reasons, I mean the embarrassment of him being drug out of his home in his underpants seemed to be more about damaging the reputation of the Workers Party rather than any suggestion that he was the kind of criminal who needed to be taken by a forceful raid. I probably worded my first post a little poorly.
