Data brokers don’t need this type of conspiracy to buy and sell your data- it’s already completely legal. How do you think these companies got it in the first place?
Headline is misleading and the beach is relatively small, but you should proactively freeze your credit anyway. I had my identity stolen a few years ago due to an insurance company I’d never heard of getting hacked and it was a huge mess. The whole incident taught me that it’s not a matter of if your identity will be stolen- it’s when. Thousands of companies have your PII (personal identifying information) even if you have never heard of them or have never done business with them because your insurance works with them or said companies legally buy your info from other companies or your state’s government. Most of these companies do alright protecting your data, but when there are so many parties that have it and it only takes one screwing up to get your identity stolen, it’s just kind of impossible for them all to do hold the line.
It really pisses me off that citizens are responsible for"protecting" their identities on their own. Obviously the system isn’t working but nobody gives a shit or wants to do anything about it. If everyone should freeze their credit by default then why is this not the default state? Why is a 9 digit number given to us as babies on an un-laminated paper card the main thing standing between us and identity theft when you have to give that number to everyone to do anything anyway? It’s completely absurd.
I don’t think so. I did a deep dive into the rabbit hole of people who keep chimps as pets a while back and from my understanding of would be pretty hard to get a chimp to fuck you. Un-castrated male chimps are extremely violent animals and even if they were to try to have sex with a human it would be an extremely dangerous endeavor. I think most of the ladies (and interestingly, it’s almost entirely ladies) who keep chimps as pets definitely have some kind of psychological problem, but they mostly view their relationship as mother/child. Not saying that eliminates the possibility of misplaced sexual attraction, but in the written content I’ve seen from monkey moms and chimp parents I have never picked up a sexual aspect, although this was before this lady was famous and I haven’t read anything about her specifically other than what’s in this thread and article.

Yeah I do too, but so would anyone who was seriously thinking about this in terms of keeping kids from looking at porn rather than restricting access to “adult content” (whatever that means) more broadly. Any programmer worth their salt would have immediately suggested “hey this is a bad idea we should do it this other way” when asked about the viability of the current solution and yet this was ignored.

I feel like I’m becoming jaded because any time I hear about some new shit that hurts poor people in this country I find myself wondering how many of these people voted for Trump in the first place. I get being desperate and feeling like some kind of change is needed… The first time. But we had a chance to see it was all bluster and bullshit already and still voted for this government. I know it’s a bad mindset but a lot of this stuff is hurting groups of people where the majority voted for Trump and I’m having trouble feeling sorry for them.

What I don’t understand is that there are ways to prevent kids from looking at porn that don’t rely on crazy shit like this, even if they do involve some government action. Having to send a picture of your face to a porn provider to view porn is the dumbest possible way to fix this. I suspect the real reason for all of this is people want to effectively ban porn altogether and dumb fucks are letting them.

I mean I am an expert in this sort of thing and I agree this is kind of a dumb idea. The innovation here is not the production of a color changing indicator, but rather putting it in a temporary tattoo. The indicator has existed for some time, and is well studied. The temporary tattoo thing is cool, but I question whether the additional cost and complexity of using it this way is worth it over existing technology, such as paper test strips. The criticism that it only tests for a specific, not commonly used drug is also valid because even though it is complicated to make something that tests for multiple drugs is far more complicated, not testing for the most commonly used drugs can create a false sense of security. It’s like if you went to a big concert and security was outside only checking for swords and knives and not guns. Yeah those things are also dangerous but it’s not the biggest threat. To further the analogy, imagine if a decent subset of people believed the security guards were checking for guns but weren’t. That would be pretty bad right? I can’t imagine the anti date rape temporary tattoo wouldn’t be misunderstood to test for a wide variety of drugs or at the very least the most common ones by at least a decent chunk of people trying to use it.

That was a big part of my criticism - it is convoluted to use and remember, and it kind of does scream that because you still have to do something weird and potentially noticeable to do the test. I am not criticizing the fact that tests that are designed to be subtle exist. I just think this particular one is kind of a stupid idea. There’s a reason it’s being reported on by a chemistry journal rather than a medical or business journal - it’s simply not a viable product when compared to existing technologies, even if it’s a cool technology.
It’s not though. Sticking your finger in your drink or pouring it onto yourself is not any more subtle than doing that with or on a test strip, and furthermore, this is a much more expensive and convoluted alternative to the test strip which can’t be ignored.
This feels like a a product in search of a market rather than a product designed to solve a problem. I mean yeah it’s a cool thing but realistically do they expect people to buy (or be given) these temporary tattoos, remember to apply them before a night out, and then subtly drip bits of their drinks on their skin before drinking them to avoid getting drugged? Do the tattoos actually stay on during a night of dancing and sweating?
This is a bad product with a bad design that “solves” a problem in a convoluted and silly way that could just as easily be solved with a paper card or strip with the color changing indicator on it that you can use to test your drinks and just keep in your purse or pocket without having to remember to apply it or worry about it rubbing off. Maybe this could find use as something for a spy to wear to subtly detect poison but even that requires a healthy stretch of the imagination.

Once you define a group of people as being subhuman and unworthy of human rights, then there is a strong motivation to expand the definition of that group to include more people that a lot of people don’t like and won’t stick their neck out to support for fear of getting labeled as part of that group and oppressed like them. The circle then just keeps growing as the machine needs more people in the outgroup to oppose. If there is broad consensus that pedophiles (or people who commit any type of crime) are a danger so foul that the people who might commit said crime should be summarily executed to subjected to torture, then oppressed minority groups will just be identified with said crime. Think about how panic about urban theft and murder was used to advance policies that harm racial minorities in the late 20th century, and how panic about “bolshevism” was a major driving force of the Holocaust. Nothing good comes from this path.
Not even then, long term. Birth rates in China and Japan are really bad in part because of toxic work cultures like this. If you spend all your waking hours at work you can’t go out and meet a partner to start a family with. It’s just a practical problem. If you’re at work 12 hours a day and sleep 8 hours a day you have 1-2 hours in the morning to get ready and go to work and 1-3 hours at night to go home and get ready for bed. You do get a day off, but you’re probably so exhausted on that day off you don’t want to go anywhere. There is simply no time to go meet a romantic partner if you’re working that much.
What I think is funny is that Japan’s GDP per capita is less than half of that of the US, and Japanese productivity per work hour is also less than half of the US. In other words, Japanese business culture is all smoke and mirrors- it’s everyone performing for each other to appear to be working harder than everyone else but they’re actually less effective at generating economic growth than countries that don’t have this kind of work culture. This shit doesn’t work- we have data showing it doesn’t. Bosses like it because they’re obsessed with the appearance of productivity rather than the real thing because in spite of what all the data says, it feels like having half the workers work double the amount of time will let you get the same amount of stuff done even when that isn’t what the data says.

I think what pisses me off most about this is everyone is just letting Trump get away with this shit and acting like this is a win because we didn’t get 30%. If everyone had just held strong and not wavered Trump would just destroy the American economy with his tariffs or chicken out like he did last time. Sure it would suck for a bit, but it would show that the international community can’t just be bullied around like this. Now, everyone has seen that this works and everyone will do it. Even worse, giving the US a deal that is this unbalanced against Europe just reinforces Trump’s political power back home. If they had just held strong Trump might have started feeling some real pressure from Congress when people ask why the fuck everything costs 30% more overnight. Now things will cost 15% more but all of the sudden corporations are suddenly able to just eat into profits to pay for it without raising prices because they’re so scared of Trump or think that it’s easy to get money sucking him off instead of competing fairly. The EU has fucked over everyone on Earth with this “deal” and not just their own citizens.
