From the article: Some fucker bought 40k CSAM images with PayPal and when the authorities compared the hash of those images with the database they found out 285 known victims in 1500 images
The victims can file restitution charges
I hope the process is almost automated and the victims don’t have to relive the abuse with each trial (only 19 known victims applied in this case which makes me think it might be a painful process to apply…)
Why is the thumbnail a baggie jeans butt with the body in a bush? What does this mean?
It’s a joke about how the criminal hid the illegal content, in a directory called “don’t look here”
It’s literally the first directory an investigator would open
You gotta use nonsensical folder names, like “Roaming” or “System32”.
I think it’s supposed to be a depiction of an attack in progress. Creepy!
I hope the process is almost automated
IIRC it is, but they do receive notice. One specific victim gets mail at least weekly of new offenders having been caught with her material. She gets an automatic cut each time, but I honestly wonder if I would want it at that point…
From the article:
In Bartels’ case, 19 people did so, asking courts for a total of $151,500 from him. The judge gave them $63,000 instead—$3,000 apiece.
For $3k I’d consider it, personally 😅
Speaking as someone who may’ve been abused as a kid - I have blocked most of my memories from those ages, especially around family…Yeah, knowing it just keeps happening can’t be great for mental health…
It’s certainly not, I recall seeing evidence (if there needs to be) that observing things like download counts alone is deeply traumatic to victims. In this case because the victims opt in I’d argue it’s up to them basically.
So hold on, they don’t even know who 1215 of the victims were??Oh fuck I couldn’t math… (40k-1.5k)/1.5k*285=7315 victims oh god
It’s either not easy or they didn’t find out or both
Lots of casual shaming WD in this article. Anyways, fucking clown defense for this monster.
A defense reminiscent of the Nuremberg Trials.
