It’s only surprising if you’ve seen the sequels first.
I’d agree with that and I’d add people who grew up only hearing about Rambo but didn’t watch it. I grew up in the 90s so Rambo was always a violent, high energy action character in my head. I was in my teens when I finally decided to watch First Blood. It’s was an amazing movie and totally rewrote what I thought about the character of John Rambo.

Yep, good point. It’s reputation is largely based off the sequels, as well.
