  • Imo that’s perfectly fine and not idiotic if you have a static IP, no ISP blocked ports / don’t care about using alt ports, and don’t mind people who find your domain knowing your IP.

I did basically that when I had a fiber line but then I added a local haproxy in front to handle additional subdomains. I feel like people gravitate towards recommending that because it works regardless of the answers to the other questions, even their security tolerance if recommending access only over VPN.

I have CGNAT now so reverse proxy in the cloud is my only option, but at least I’m free to reconfigure my LAN or uproot everything and plant it on any other LAN and it’ll all be fine.

  • This is 99% my setup, just with a traefik container attached to my wifeguard container.

Can recommend especially because I can move apartments any time, not care about CGNAT (my current situation which I predicted would be the case), and easily switch to any backup by sticking my boxes on any network with DHCP that can reach the Internet (like a 4G hotspot or a nanobeam pointed at a public wifi down the road) in a pinch without reconfiguring anything.

  • I unfortunately can’t really say since I’ve only played an hour with a friend who is really into it, and I never grew up playing any of the Mario party games. But I know a few people who really like it so it can’t be that bad I guess haha. I also can’t speak to joycons because we use Xbox controllers, I think there are some mini games that rely on Xbox layout / colors so that might be rough

  • I used to collect tons of local multiplayer couch co-op games back in college when I had 3 other gamer housemates. Lots of junk but some gems. My favorite has to be gang beasts and Blur (you’ll have to pirate that one these days - think Mario kart if it was made in the style of need for speed). Also golf with your friends has good local multiplayer support as well as olliolli2 if you’re into side scrolling skateboarding. Then there’s chaotic cooperative games like overcooked, moving out, and out of space, as well as Magicka 2. For a Mario party type game there’s pummel party, and a good twin stick shooter is assault android cactus.

  • Is there any way to connect the bsky android app to the atproto.africa relay or a third party appview that uses the atproto.africa relay? I wouldn’t mind using bsky more if there was a clone of the android app that doesn’t use the bsky relay/appview. Looking at whtwnd it appears to be just web and not native apps?

I would like to host my own PDS and access bsky through a native app using third party relay+appview, but I haven’t seen a way to do this yet.

  • Thanks, and surprisingly I feel like I’ve been doing alright all things considered. It was a tough couple of days at first and felt pretty traumatic losing someone who I saw face to face for years, especially when there was never any indication of any health issue, and they’re the lynchpin holding together our small team - it’s pretty hard to think about how we all wished each other a good weekend on Friday and that was it. But I’ve been trying my best to process in a healthy way and come to terms with the reality that anyone can be taken away at any moment - as if life were a battlefield. This is the first loss I’ve really experienced as an adult and never really had to face that reality. I also find it somewhat comforting that it’s probably unlikely that all the future losses I experience will be so sudden, as well as the fact that our team is all going through this together in our own ways.

I’m lucky that I have a great partner as well as the sweetest cat who is keeping me on my routine. Even if I’m not actually being productive with work, just going through my daily routine and getting used to seeing only the faces of the rest of the team feels like it’s helping. Even making my morning coffee makes me sad because I’m used to seeing my boss shortly after, but I guess the more I do it the less painful it’ll be. I initially wanted to take a week completely off, but part of me feels like showing up on zoom every morning is helping my coworkers as much as it helps me to maintain a sense of normalcy and adjust to how things are going to be.

We basically can at my job, but despite our coworker/manager passing away over the weekend it still feels like we’re all obligated to show up to our daily zoom check ins because everyone is trying to process and seeing faces every day probably helps. If it weren’t for that I’d call in sad for the week.

  • The idea is that you change or remove your username after someone else starts a conversation with you, so the username can no longer be used to subpoena your account details.

Put another way, signal is able to provide those 2 pieces of information to law enforcement based on a phone number. This helps you to prevent law enforcement having a phone number to ask signal to look up in the first place, assuming you change your username every time you hand it out.

They also hash the usernames that they store on your account which means law enforcement can’t ask what usernames are being used, only being able to ask for specific usernames which are currently in use.
